The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department has identified the man attacked and killed by a shark as Lucas Ransom, 19, of Romoland, Calif.
Deputies say Ransom is a UCSB student. They believe he was attacked, then bled to death before his 20-year-old friend and two witnesses helped him to shore. Ransom was body-boarding, and his friend was surfing.
The attack happened Friday morning off the coast of Surf Beach near Vandenberg Air Force Base. The base closed Surf, Wall and Minuteman beaches for the next 72 hours while the incident is investigated. Surf Beach is the only beach open to the public in that area.
The Department of Fish and Game is on scene, trying to determine what kind of shark attacked Ransom. Witnesses say the shark was between 14 and 18 feet long.
The last time a shark attack was reported on Surf Beach was in 2008, according to officials on scene. No one was hurt, but a person's surfboard had visible bite marks.
County officials have posted warnings on nearby beaches as a precaution.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's helicopter is patrolling the area, as well as at least one Coast Guard boat, searching for a piece of the victim's missing limb.
