Elpusztult a 2010-es dél-afrikai világbajnokság egyik legnépszerűbb figurája, a német válogatott összes vb-mérkőzését helyesen megtippelő Paul polip, aki Spanyolország döntőbeli sikerét is megjósolta.

Az oberhauseni tropikárium lakója ma délelőtt pusztult el, és a nemzetközi sportsajtóban azonnal a vezető hírek között számoltak be a világbajnokság legendássá vált állatának haláláról.

A szomorú hírt Stefan Porwoll, az oberhauseni Sea Life tropikárium menedzsere közölte a sajtóval.

„Paul lenyűgözte a világot azzal, hogy helyesen tippelte meg a németek meccseit és a döntő eredményét. Sikerével talán több ember érdeklődését váltotta ki, mint maga a világbajnokság. Nagyon szerettük őt, és hiányozni fog nekünk. Úgy tűnik, hogy békés, természetes körülmények között távozott az éjszaka, és az vigasztal bennünket, hogy élvezte az életét” – mondta Porwoll a tropikárium hivatalos honlapjának.

A világ leghíresebb polipjának helyére hamarosan egy másik octopus költözik be, és a vb alatt a televíziós felvételeken is gyakran látott akváriumot Paulról nevezik el.

Paul 2008-ban született Angliában, és már a 2008-as Európa-bajnokságon is kiválóan tippelt, egy kivételével a németek összes meccsének kimenetelét helyesen jósolta meg. A vb után már tudni lehetett, hogy a dél-afrikai az utolsó nagy tornája, mivel a polipok két-három évet élnek.
